Moi University Mechanical & Production Engineering Courses
The undergraduate degree program is designed to cover a wide area of Mechanical, Production and Industrial Engineering. Specifically, the degree program is designed to offer sound training in the following core areas:-
- Manufacturing Engineering and Technology
- Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
- Applied Mechanics and Materials Science
- Engineering Design
- Industrial Engineering and Management
In order to produce Graduate Engineers who not only are competent in mechanical and production systems but have a fairly high level of specialization in this field, the department has embarked on the curriculum review to include the mechatronic theme but without the change of fundamental content of the traditional mechanical engineering curriculum. This is basically an integration of mechanical engineering and electronics coupled with elements of computer applications. The resultant curriculum is stimulating with contemporary emphasis and enhanced content that prepares students to pursue careers that are characterized by a high degree of innovation. This is in conformity with the trend in the modern industry.
There is a set curriculum for the five years of study leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) degree in mechanical & production engineering. The first year provides a solid foundation in the basic sciences and general engineering education. All branches of engineering take the same courses in Mathematics, Mechanics, Physics and Engineering Drawing. Some of the branches also have branch-specific courses in their first-year curricula. The choice of elective subjects is offered in the fifth year of study.
Liberal courses are also incorporated in the fifth year curriculum to adequately prepare graduates to join the working force. The liberal courses are tailored towards the following areas:
- Management sciences
- Research and development
- Accounting and Finance
- Professional ethics
- Industrial safety.
The undergraduate program puts a lot of emphasis on the practical application of theoretical knowledge. This is achieved through extensive workshop training, laboratory training, seminars, industrial visits and supervised field attachments.
There are three (3) postgraduate programmes:-
- MSc. in Production Engineering
- MSc. in Energy studies
- DPhil. in Energy Studies
The areas of specialization include the following:-
- Applied mechanics.
- Machine design
- Manufacturing technology.
- Traditional and advanced engineering materials
- Renewable energy resources
- Energy management
- Industrial safety.
The aim of these programmes is to provide advanced training in a specialized branch of Engineering and prepare candidates for careers in industry as well as in research and teaching institutions.
